Colours of joy

(2020 lockdown edition)

I love my watercolour spirals but I struggle with using paper because it ends up being very costly & delicate to frame and arrange shipping for my collectors. So I investigated & researched into other ways I could create with my watercolour Soulful Spirals style with a substrate that didn't require framing behind glass to maintain archival quality & protection.

I found a new clay substrate called Aquabord. It's a clay coated panel & it mimics similar qualities to paper for water-soluable paint.

It isn't the same as paper, so I found myself learning YET ANOTHER new language as I found my way around the Aquabord.
It required me to slow even further down. It required me to use all the patience & planning I learnt with the paper Soulful Spirals.
It challenged me to find new marks & ways to hold my brush, lay down colour & dance with the whole process.

This new way of seeing my creative process evolved from being a challenge to being a comfort as the COVID-19 situation overcame our normal way of life.
It became a source of solace during a multi-layered season of lockdown, homeschooling & moving house — it became a reminder of the constant practice to choose Joy.

It comes in different forms, flavours & colours. And it can easily turn in to an ordeal instead of an adventure
The question I’m asking with this series is... How do I keep choosing joy! Where am I given opportunities to find joy in hidden places What does joy look like if it was a colour? Would that change with context? Why does it feel different depending on the lens? Which ingredients make up the nuance changes of JOY?

My hope was that as I practice choosing joy, as I keep seeking fun & fulfilment— the painting will reflect that energy

I hope that the art will resonate with your seeking & practice. It will be a reminder of hope. It will keep your eyes open to fun & playfulness even as you seek purpose & beauty in the mess
