HOW I FOUND MY CREATIVE FLOW & MY CREATIVE VOICE

  • I use to spend MONTHS thinking and overthinking about the paintings I wanted to make. And when I did, it would take WEEKS to finish. And I never felt satisfied.

  • I second guessed every mark, ever step, every moved I made in front of the easel. It was so frustrating to feel all the inspiration & have nothing to show for it

  • I felt like a fraud. I felt like a loser. I felt like I was losing the creativity that I had my whole life, from childhood to being a designer at the biggest greeting cards company in the world.

  • I didn’t know how to step into creative flow — I knew what it felt like but it was always a lucky guess how to slip into it

  • I didn’t have any confidence in my creative voice, I didn’t have any clarity around what I was doing or why I wanted to make the art I wanted to make

  • I thought I could think & think & think my way to clarity. I kept waiting for some magic boost of confidence to fall from the sky

THE SCARIEST THING I DID

I don’t like scary - I don’t even watch horror movies! 

But scarier than movies?

What’s even scarier than quitting a ‘dream job’ I had working as an in-house artist for a global greeting card company?

Sending out an email

This was before Kickstarter was available for Aussies - so I made my own little Kickstarter style promotion. 

I emailed friends and friends of friends. (So uncomfortable for this introvert that HATES asking people for favors or help)

Pouring my heart out about my new ‘project’ & asking if they would help me ‘Jumpstart’ MY dream job to paint.

I offered different tiers where they could claim different sized original paintings…

🔥BEFORE I had painted them.🔥

Could they trust me enough? Could they invest in me?

Internally I was asking:

Could I trust myself? Who am I to ask for anything? Who am I to dare?

Could I dare to take such a huge, scary step? Could I be consistent & productive enough?

 
 

The highest tier I offered was $200 (which felt like SO MUCH MONEY then!) with the rest at $25-$100

Deep down I hoped to raise maybe $300 to buy some professional grade paints and brushes.

▫️*dramatic pause*▫️

I ended up adding a zero to my hoped for number.

I was so moved by the trust & investment I also produced my own (first!) solo exhibition off the back of that Jumpstart project!

That young hopeful face you see in the picture above holding all those paintings?

It’s the happy & tired face of someone who painted over 30 original paintings in 3 months to give to everyone who invested!

With a handful extra to spare!

It’s been over 8 years since - with 2 babies in tow and many more changes to myself & my dream work.

Though those numbers & ’scary’ steps feels cute now,  my art practice & business continues to scare me & push me to grow. 

And my collectors, clients & customers are still the ones whose investment & love that keeps my art practice flowing and producing at higher levels.

Even if you only have a tiny spark of hope, a tiny seed of belief in your ‘crazy’ desire for beauty, art, creativity & joyful purpose.

🔥What I wish I realised sooner...

That the crazy deadline, the huge number of paintings (it felt impossible!) really forced me to immerse myself in my creative practice. No more distractions masked as ‘being too busy’ or ‘indecision paralysis’

I really had to trust my creative voice (which I was still finding at the time!)

I didn’t have time to keep questioning every step.

That was really my first taste at realising & relearning what I needed to find my creative FLOW…on cue!

Trust me when I say, that was HARD

I was so sporadic & a stop/start champion when it came to my creative practice. 

I could at my best then, finish ONE painting a fortnight -- and then spend another week questioning everything I did. 

🔥What I wish I had learnt earlier....

To actually TAKE ACTION. Focusing on taking steps forward. I had invested in a coach earlier but only really had the courage to implement his advice after AGES (I’m talking MONTHS) of procrastinating. I wish I didn’t waste so much time!

🔥I wished I had invested in deeper coaching to really hold me accountable.

I would have sent that email a lot earlier. I would have found answers a lot sooner and with less angst. 

Instead of wasting that energy on researching and looking for the magic bullet to ‘solve all my problems’

I ended up wasting so much more time, energy and money! And all I got was even LESS confidence, LESS clarity & LESS conviction on why I wanted to be a professional artist in the first place! 

🔥I wish I had invested time & energy to cultivate connections with a creative community - it would have felt less lonely! 

The support of people who GET your struggles is such a salve for your creative soul after a hard day in the studio.
Though friends and family love & support you? They don’t quite understand the deeper needs you have as a creative. 

🔥I wish I didn’t waste so much of that time on the marketing side, the money side and all other things INSTEAD of the actual connecting to MY ART and my VOICE and learning to harness my creative Flow!

🔥It’s for that past me - still dreaming big and wishing but also procrastinating a lot. 

Showing up half ass for my dreams, or getting cold feet & losing momentum all the time

NOW: I still have BIG dreams but I’m in the habit of taking steps forward every day. Even when I’m not feeling the flow or the clarity I use to wait around for!

🔥It’s for that me that didn’t really have confidence in my creative voice and a little bit (a lot!) of portfolio shame. 

Which meant I didn’t really promote myself or connected with opportunities to really step up into being a professional artist.

I wasn’t painting consistently and thought I was too busy (haha! All my mama friends laugh with me at how naive that thought was!)

NOW: I know how to be create everyday. I know I AM creative everyday. I keep the momentum of prolific creative energy going even if I get interrupted every 5 minutes. In my art, my business, my motherhood, my productivity & my community of Muses.

🔥It’s for that past me who doesn’t even know she doesn’t know the stuff I know now! 

Like, knowing that, to find your creative flow you need to know & be confident in your creative voice. You need to know what to focus on & allow to flow

Also knowing your creativity & how you connect to your flow IS the path to consistency & confidence!

NOW: I can trust in my creative process. I have faith in my creative practice so that when new opportunities come my way, I can say YES! I know I can weave a thriving creative practice with building my art business, doing client work, love & nurture my children & find fun and connection in all the other relationships in my life. Including learning to bake sourdough bread!

 

 

 

how did cultivate more confidence & clarity in my art?

  • I had a mindset & belief work practice along with my actual art-making practice. THIS IS HUGE & one of the best things I learnt & received from investing in coaching & high-level masterminds

  • I DECIDED to create prolifically. I DECIDED it was already within me & I DECIDED I would embrace the mess & imperfection as I walked this path

  • I gave myself BIG doses of kindness & grace. I was juggling a newborn & a pre-schooler and ALL the chores, responsibilities & fullness of life that season of life brings.

  • I focused on tiny baby steps forward

  • I focused on daily disciplines balanced with graceful flow with whatever interruptions & changes that comes with having little ones at home.

  • I changed my story from being an ‘inconsistent person’ to someone who was consistent with coming back even after some mis-steps and ‘failures’

  • I surrendered & trusted in the process — that if I take action FIRST consistently, it will lead to the confidence & clarity I was looking for. I would find more flow & find it easier to be consistent too.

    And unsurprisingly, what I believed to be true, the place of faith I took action from, ALL CAME TRUE

Is this going to be a really hard & strick bootcamp style? I’m scared I won’t keep up & fail at yet another thing

  • I know how scary it can be to feel excited about the possibility of creating more soulfully & consistently aligned with your goals AND remember how burnt out or lost you were when you didn’t meet your expectations

  • This is about both discipline AND BEING KIND & GENTLE with yourself. This is the path to consistent flow despite life’s messiness.

I’m going to be away during one of the weeks / can’t make it to the live videos - can I still access the trainings?

  • YES!! All videos will be recorded so you can watch the replays, re-watch the training over time & go at your own pace. My personal attention & support will only be during the LIVE portion of 29th June - 7th August.
